Fes Things to do in Fez

I am fascinated by travel and have visited most of the Middle East - in the not too distant future I plan to study Arabic in Amman-Jordan. I currently work in IT for an international bank.

I am planning to go to Fez for a week - I am reading Titus Burkhart’s book Fez-City of Islam before I go for ideas as to what to do - but I would love to hear from people who have already been. Also ideas for short trips from Fez to nearby villages would be very much appreciated.

Fez is probably one of the most fascinating cities of the Arabic world, at least of the Maghreeb. Visiting the medina (I should say the medinas as they are three cities in one) is a must in itself: riahds, mosqueys, coranic school, markets, etc.
From Fez you can easily visit the Rif region, which is very different from other areas of Morroco; do not miss the city of Chefchaouen, one of the best points of interest in the North.

You're welcome. Let me just add Meknes that you can visit as a side trip. It is not far from Fez and very interesting as well.

let's keep this thread growing... it could never end!

if you are muslim, make sure to pray at the Karaouine Mousque and visit the Zawiyya of Moulay Idriss...

my personal recommendation - just lose yourself in the medina (9800+ streets!) and stay lost all day.... see where you end up and what adventures you have...

Look me up - we can have tea... my best friends live in the old medina...

to be continued
