| Saint Petersburg | Is "Dinner with the Peasants" offered to tour groups in Russia? Posted: Tue October 9, 2007 09:30 PM UTC
I am looking for a unique dinner experience for my large group (26 people) in Russia. When I took a tour group to Romania, the tour operator offered a "dinner with the peasants". We drove to a farm in a rural community and sat down to a nice private dinner prepared by a peasant family. Does anyone know if this unique experience is offered to tour groups in Russia? This was an incredible experience in Romania and allowed us to see Romanian life up close and personal. My group will be in the Moscow, Novgorod, and St. Petersburg areas of Russia in November.

I concur with Lev Nikolaievich that Feel Yourself Russian is well worth the money - nice venue, very professional show, nice buffet with champagne and caviar in between.

Thanks, Lev, for your insight into the areas. You've convinced me that there is no comparison between Russia and Romania.
Can you tell me if the "folk show with fourchet at Nikolaevsky Palace" in St. Petersburg is the folk show "Feel Yourself Russian"? Also, what is "fourchet"? For another $26 per person, we can do the gala dinner. Is it worth the price increase? Thanks again, Lev!

Lev,
You also mention cruises in St. Petersburg: "Or you could have a dinner cruise on a boat on the Neva River. The best ones offer a late start around 10pm, with the idea of sailing down the Neva at 1am to see all the city bridges opening ahead of you." We will be in St. Petersburg in late November. Are the cruises still running, and if so, is it worth it at this time of year? Thanks!

Lots of travel agencies in St Petersburg offer dinner in a russian family. So you can get in touch with russian people and taste the russian food prepared by them. I think that it is what you meant and looking for. It is just the word "peasants" that was upsetting for certain people.

Dinner in Russian family with 26 tourists???????? Lol. Typical urban apartments for family of 3-4 is 40-60 sq.m, not more, as soon as this service is organized in not too wealthy families. No problem to find such place for 2-4 people (dances are not guaranteed:-))))) but for big group......

Thanks for all your insights. Of course I was in no way trying to upset anyone with the medieval word "peasants". "Dinner with the Peasants" is offered to tour groups in Romania by tour operators. However, the place we visited was with a family who actually owns and runs a large farm and has a large dining hall for tourists. It is more of a folk show as they are dressed in period coutumes. I think it is an attempt to show what life was like in medievel times.
Thanks again!

Just to reverse the discussion, what would a dinner with peasants be in America?
we are not sure. Maybe a church potluck?

Hi:
In Canada for example, you can go on a farm and have dinner with what we call "the farmers" and eat the products of their farm (vegetables, meat, etc.) and at the same time have a look around (it is quite fun for the kids who can see the animals).
