Machu Picchu Questions about bus from aguascalientes to site entrance
Posted: Tue October 9, 2007 01:41 AM UTC
1. How long does the bus ride take? Is a schedule available online? (If not: when does the first one leave each day?)

2. Is it feasible instead to hike up from Aguas Calientes? If so, how long should we allow to reach the entrance? (And I understand we have another hike up once inside) If that is feasible, does that part require a paid guide?

Thanks,
c

Buses take around 15 minutes, leave from around 7 am and run frequently.

Buses run constantly. You can't wait more than 15 minutes. It's pretty cheap considering the hike is switchbacks straight up. If you hike it, it will take you around an hour. You can do that yourself, no problem, but I don't know anyone who would want to.

first bus is at 5.25 and at USD12 return (payable only in USD) its a bit of a rip off. if you want to climb Wayna Picchu you will have to get up early for one of the first buses. If you are visiting MP on your own see my travel page for some tips as thats what i did, would definitely recommend a guide.

Save your energy for hiking around MP. There are several trails to peaks inside the park. Unless things have changed recently, no guide will be necessary. Then if you are still feeling energetic you could hike down to Aguas Calientes rather than take the bus.
