Crete Island Travel Forum

We want to go to Crete, but can't decide which is better. We have seen offers on Chania and Iraklion. The prices are about the same, Chania is a little cheaper. Can someone recommend one or the other?

Chania is nicer than Iraklion. But you could make up your own mind if you look at VT pages on both.

You have given so little information that a really useful reply is not possible!

When do you plan to go?
What are your main interests? History, culture, sunbathing, simply relaxing?

Both destinations can offer all, so without more informaion - and I am assuming the cheaper offers you refer to mean flights only or flight plus package deal you could toss a coin or better still have a look at the Chania and Iraklion Travel Guides on VT.
I would go for Chania now - but only because I have been to Iraklion - and enjoyed evry bit of it and Chania looks so very interesting.

Thank you for your replies. I will try to find the page. We like to see history, but also spending time on the beach.

Chania is much better than Iraklion in my opinion.

I clicked on the travel guides but couldn't click on a city. But I found a lot of information. Iraklion is a place to visit, but Chania is a very nice city it seems. Thank you again!

If you type a place name in the Destination Search at the top right of a VT page you will get the Travel Page you want.

Iraklion is a bigger city, has bigger port and bigger airport. It is near the center of the island, so you can go around easier. It is also very near to the archaeological sites of Knossos and Faistos.
Chania is more beautiful, especially the old port area. From there you can visit some wonderful beaches at SW of the island and the gorgeous Ravine of Samaria (trekking down to Ayia Roumeli.

I agree with Stefanos. Iraklion also has a nice museum and fairly good shopping. Hania, is a quieter city, with the old port a main attraction. After that, the centre of Hania doesn't really have many nice hotels. Crete is such a huge island, that it is difficult to see it all. Rethymnon is a nice place to stay also. From there you can easily drive 30 minutes to the bottom, south side of Crete to visit the wonderful area of Preveli...see my pages for more info about Preveli.
