we are planning to visit lucerne in winter. are the daylight hours too short for that. is it safe to wander about in the night?

I've been to Lucerne twice in winter and it's a beautiful place, whatever the season. During the Christmas period they turn one of the old houses into an advent calendar house, lighting up a different window each day. It's also a good base for exploring the area and as long as you get going fairly early in the morning, you'll have plenty of time to see things in daylight. I haven't been for a couple of years but I found it to be very safe indeed... absolutely no worries about walking around at night.
