If you have a Debit card use an ATM - easiest, most convenient methos of obtaining cash. Plenty of machines in Johannesburg.

changing money through the different foreign exchange counters in south africa, be it in the malls or the banks also incurr a commision charge of 30-40 rands per transaction. Ask the counter first how much they charge as commission so that you would not be surprised. The counters also ask details about where you are staying and the tel number of the place, so be ready with the information. Its generally a hassle exchanging foriegn currency in south africa than in other countries because of the strict anti money laundering requirements.
Also, there is a foreign exchange counter in the airport at jhb does not charge commission for a specific brand of travellers check, but i cant remember which company it is! bong
