Cape Town West Coast - Route 27
Posted: Wed October 3, 2007 11:42 PM UTC
Thanks to all the sage advice on this forum I've pretty much managed to plan my upcoming trip (17 - 24 October) to Cape Town.

I'll be staying in Bloubergstrand for the full duration, have hired a car to get to where ever I need to go and have included all the 'regulars' in my 'things to do list'.

The one bit of info still missing, which despite research on several forums I've not been able to obtain, is must see / do places up North along the so called Route 27. Up as far as Langebaan probably.

Any advice regarding places to see, places to eat, abundance of the wild flowers that time of year etc. will be much appreciated.

Regards to all

Hi there,
You posting gives the impression of a well planned, well mapped out trip. The West coast is completely opposite. It invites you to meander without any specific destination in mind. Time to relax and chill out.
A visit to the West Coast National Park is always a good detour (although the flowers are probably over by now). Once you have passed through the park you will arrive in Langebaan. There are numerous eating places there and just wander along the lagoon front until you find a place that tickles your fancy.
For a different trip back, take the in-land route via Malmsbery (sp?) and the wheat fields of the Swartland (it is not that far out of your way). There are a couple of winefarms out that way too.
Have a wonderful trip.
Kim

The main flower season traditionally ends in September. A very good flower display is on the edges of the golf-course at Langebaan - if you see nothing there, then the season is definitely over.

The West Coast is popular because the pace is just so much slower. Just north of Cape Town, suddenly there is all this space and nothing obvious to do . . .

Suggest you go as far as the tiny village of Paternoster and have lunch at the small Voorstrand restaurant. The farmstall shops near the intersection of the R27 and the Yzerfontein/Darling road (R315) are worth a coffee stop, but the café in Yzerfontein is also good. Walks on the beaches in Yzerfontein, Langebaan and Paternoster. Langebaan caters for the wind-sport crowd such as the kite-surfers. There's a pseudo-Greek village and casino just north of Langebaan.

You HAVE to travel about 20 mins extra (after langebaan)and visit the geourgous seaside town of paternoster scattered with any b and Bs and some AWESOME beach restaurants for lunch or dinner- its quaint and worth visiting.

Before langebaan is the Postberg national park- go in and drive your way to "kraal bay" there are houseboats situated on the lagoon (the langebaan lagoon) you can swim there and if the tide is nice and low you can beach there for a while!!! depending on the weather.... you will also pass a tiny village in the reserve called church haven- one can rent a cottage there too-

Thanks to all for the info and advice. Will save the R27 for when I'm in the mood for a nice lazy day. Will revise the plan to go up as far as Paternoster and might even squeeze in a stop at Tieties Baai.

My Indonesian girlfriend is like the proverbial 'cat on a hot tin roof' about this trip. On a previous trip I took her to Kruger and the Lowveld area and she absolutely loved it, and our country, in general.

11 days and counting.....yeeeehaaaa...

Have a great weekend guys and thanks again.

Colin
