| Sheffield | Location of hotel Posted: Wed October 3, 2007 06:39 PM UTC
Hi
I am spending my Christmas vacation in Sheffield and will be arriving by train. I will be staying at the Leopold Hotel on Leopold square and I wanted to know if it was in walking distance of the train station. I really enjoyed my two day stay last year and am looking forward to spending a little more time walking around the area. If any one has any suggestions of places that would be cool to visit , please let me know. Thanks Kim |

Hi , LUCKY you.I walk by the Leopald most days. The walk form the station is perhaps 10mins. From the station doors head left and follow the curving stainless steel waterfall, then climb Howard Street with its twinkly blue lights. At the top you cross the road and pass the library an from there its maybe 200metres to the Leopald. Its the main foot route and well signed. A free ! Bus service from the station to the city centre starts end of Oct, I'll have a look round and check the route for you

Mmm , of course it may not run Xmasday/Boxing day. But if it is the stop you want is Town Hall, the leopald is 100 metres away.
The walk from the leopald, through the Peace gardens, Millenium Sq, Winter gardens , Millenium Galleries , Howard street is worth doing , you could kill an houror two doing that. The Red Lion the next street over from Howard street is a nice pub. Also The Botanical Gardens worth a trip, reopened last summer after a £6m spruce up. The 60 bus goes from about 50 metres from the leopald.(West Street) If you walk down from the glass houses to the bottom of the park ,you get to Eccelsal Road where all the boutique shops are.For something different , try walking the Five Wiers Walk, and novelty for Sheff, its flat-ish. You could do worse than buy Richard Hawleys album ,Coles Corner. The tourist info is next to St Maries Cathedral,a five min walk from the hotel. Enjoy your stay!

Hi Kim! When do You arrive and how long are You staying in Sheffield? Are You travelling by Yourself? What do You like to see/Do?
The Leopold looks very nice from the outside - Sheffields first Boutique hotel!Behind the hotel is a small square with a water feature, a tapas bar/restaurant-Platilloes-I've been here for drinks, and we're having our works Christmas night out here. There is another restaurant open and 2 more due to open soon. I'll be in Venice over Christmas, but if I was in Sheffield, I'd be watching our local sword team at Handsworth - They perform outside the church at 12.00 mid day Boxing Day. The performance consists of a couple of intricate 'sword dances' some satirical performance, old english carols, then adjourning to a local pub for more singing and liquid refreshment!(Bus No 52 from opposite Your hotel (outside All Bar One) takes You there and back) A lot of places will be closed Christmas Day, but there are still plenty of things to see, that won't cost anything. Let me know your dates,(and what Your interests are) and I'll let You know what else will be happening in and around Sheffield over Christmas. Best Wishes, Sue

thekeys2,
You can't take the supertram from the back of the station and once you've walked to the nearest stop you may as well have walked to the Leopold Hotel. As for the rest of your post: this forum is about helping people explore new places or get to know better places they are revisiting. So if you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. I for one think Sheffield is a wonderful city with plenty to do, and it seems the other VTers on here agree.

I think Meadowhall shopping centre will be open on Boxing Day - I checked the website and the Christmas openings are not on yet. You take a tram from the city centre and Meadowhall is the terminus.
Sheffield is a great city - its nice to see someone wanting to visit somewhere actually worth visiting rather than the standard UK destinations which are sometimes over rated. I wouldn't bother visiting Rotherham though. Just out of interest where are you from?
