| Niagara Falls | Any Indian sites or museums? Posted: Mon October 1, 2007 10:03 PM UTC
We are interested in indigenous art and history. Are there places near Niagara Falls that deal with the local Indian nations? Thanks for your insights.

No there is nothing worth going to for this sort in Niagra Falls. If there is it will be very expensive. Niagra Falls is a large tourist trap outside of the Falls there is not much there. If you want the full experience of what a native village was like there are several places you can go too. The biggest to my mind in Ontario is in Midland. Mount St. Marie amoung the huron where the Iriquois battle the Huron indians and the missionaries who lived there. I have been to a reserve which is where native people where designated to live when the country was settled and they are still there as it is there land for lack of way to describe it and the best I saw is in Peterborough. The place I think was called curved lake and the art was great and was from alot of different tribes. I am unsure of what tribe you like but it is totally different from tribe to tribe.

Here are some historical sites in and around the region (pdf file ~ 10 pages)with a few references to native peoples. I would therefore conclude that the displays at the museums would include native history. The native people of the area were Iroquois.
http://www.riverbrink.org/files/HistoricSitesBrochureRS.pdf I'm still looking for native-specific sites but here's another page on Niagara history with Parks Canada: http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/on/fortgeorge/ne/ne7_E.asp http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/on/queenston/index_e.asp http://www.niagaraparks.com/heritage/plaques.php http://www.niagaraparks.com/heritage/forteriehistory.php http://www.niagaraparks.com/heritage/plaques.php Try contacting Niagara Parks for specific Iroquoian site information: http://www.niagaraparks.com/can-we-help/contactus.php AHA....I'm getting warmer: http://www.niagarapeninsula.com/?pg=15 http://www.stcatharines.ca/tourism/heritage_history.asp (St. Catharines is approx. 20 min. drive from Niagara Falls) Of course, the Royal Ontario Museum on Queens Park Avenue in Toronto will have the most comprehensive native art and historical artifacts. Hope this helps your search. Graeme.
