Roskilde Place to Visit in Roskilde, Denmark
Posted: Mon September 8, 2003 12:26 AM UTC
I am due to visit Roskilde in a couple of weeks - I have been advised to look at both the Cathedral and the Viking Museum. I wondered if there was anything else worth seeing, something perhaps a little more contemporary. I would also welcome any advice on a nice cheap place to eat, other than the obvious burger chains or coffee shops. Finally - I will be arriving by train from Kbh but I have no idea how big Roskilde is or how easy it is to get around on foot. I am nearly 20 and can speak some Danish.

I'm afraid the cathedral and viking ship museum are the main things on my Roskilde page too :-))) They simply are some of the main sights of the entire Denmark! I would take a walk up the hill near the harbour too and envy the people living in the pretty cottages up there :-)

It's easy to go from the station to the cathedral and then down to the harbour through the city park with its wells. Just start off by rounding the square with the huge vases as you come out of the station. Turn left and you are in a main shopping street which takes you to the town hall square and there you can't miss the cathedral.

It's just a small town, and like most Danish do most people speak good english, so you don't have to hang on the few words of danish you know.
Wonderfull country and people!

Roskilde is small enough that you wil find everything easily. For cheap food if you want fast food there are lots of Kebab places, especially in the 'downtown' area. ALso on the cathedarl side of the train station you can but a 'Chinabox which I think is a danish invention and you get three kinds of 'Chinese Food' ie chow mein, for about 30-50 crowns. If you have the time I reccoment visiting Koge. You can take the bus directly from Roskile, ask in the station for the number. Koge is a beautiful seaside town with lots to see. Have fun!

You are well advised to visit the Viking Museum and Cathedral. We were there in 02 and a replical longship was under construction. The cathedral is historically very significant. We especially liked the large painting of Christian IV wearing his bandage over his eye. There was a bakery within site of the cathedral that had the finist looking pastries I had ever seen ( considering this is Denmark that is saying a lot ) but it was closed after we finished in the Cathedral. Must have closed around 3 or 4 pm

The replica longship was finally launched into the water and baptised by the Queen last Saturday.

All the answers given above are good answers. If you're in Roskilde on a Sunday before september 30th I can also tip you about going to Ledreborg Slot (www.ledreborgslot.dk). See their webpage for opening hours.

Roskilde museum isn't a very big museum, and all the signs are in danish. However if you have time...

I'm from Roskilde - it's not a big town (I guess about 50.000) - easy to get around in the centre on foot. I tried this place to eat lately: "Philis" (Algade 42 · 4000 Roskilde · Tlf. 46 35 15 46) it's not expencive.
If you're interested in old buildings then go and see "Sct.Jørgensbjerg" (near the harbour), take a walk down the walkingstreet "Skomagergade", see the museum (http://www.roskildemuseum.dk/UK/). In summer there's many beautiful places around Roskilde like: The forest "Boserup skov", the iron age village in Lejre, try a viking ship on the fjord. Have a good time!
