Garmisch-Partenkirchen Sleigh Rides at Christmas
Posted: Sat September 29, 2007 11:50 PM UTC
We will be traveling to Garmisch-Partenkirchen between Cristmas and New Years. I am hoping somebody can give me information about horse drawn sleigh rides. Since it was nearly impossible to get hotel rooms I am sure everything will be very busy and would love be able to pre book or something..any ideas?
Suggestions on other things, christmassy?

One reason it is extremely busy is because of the Garmisch ski jumps which is a tradition on New Year's Day. It is shown on TV all over Europe - I've had many a hungover breakfast to it here in Sweden :)

Providing there is enough snow horse drawn sleighs run up from the Ski stadium to Partnachklamm Alm just before the entrance to Partnachklamm. Yhe gorge may be open if it is cold enough and is worth a walk before getting the sleigh back.
There should be no problem with queues. It's about a 15 minute ride. If you can get to Elmau sleighs run from the Konigshof bar to Ferchensee or vice versa but they are both difficult to get to without walking.

There are a number of second hand shops in G-P so you could buy a cheap sledge or bum seat and use many of the lower slopes.Hausberg has a floodlit area for toboggans in the evening. If you go up the Hausberg lift and go to Bayernhaus you can ride down from there on a path that is also floodlit. It's steep in places so be careful with youngsters. The hotel should give you tips on where else to toboggan safely. Apart from that just walk the hills, the paths are well cleared and signposted.

You wouldn't happen to be staying at the Edelweiss Lodge, would you? They organize horse-drawn carriage rides, but I am not sure whether they do SLEIGH rides specifically. You must be a military member (or a guest of one) to stay at the Edelweiss Lodge.

Assuming you're traveling to GaP on "civilian status," hopefully you'll be able to find a horse-drawn sleigh ride locally. Honestly, I think that might be more interesting and adventuresome than one through the US Lodge anyway. Perhaps you might check with the tourist office in the town center.
