| Messina | If not Etna? - Messina from a cruise ship? Posted: Fri September 28, 2007 11:15 PM UTC
On Oct. 10, we (60 year olds) will have 10 hours in port here. What might be uniue about Messina and area for people who like a leisurely view of another country's sights, habits & specialties?

Only a few blocks from the docks is the Cathedral of Messina, a must see. The clock tower with the animated statues (12 noon) is worth a visit. The grounds also have fountains. The Messina Regional Museum has many artworks. 2 hours tops. My maternal grandmother came to America from Messina and she once told me "go beyond the city to see Sicily". I would hire a taxi driver and have him take you to the top streets of Taromina, no steps to walk, and see this fairyland town on the slopes of Mt. Etna. It is within the time (10 hrs) to get there, have lunch, return and still see the main sights of Messina.
