Christmas Island Cost of living - food costs
Posted: Thu September 27, 2007 04:41 AM UTC
Despite research on the internet I haven't found general information on the cost of living on Christmas Island (apart from real estate prices and shire property and rubbish collection rates).

Can anyone tell me what general day-to-day food costs are?

I would expect brightly coloured packets of Coco Pops and other processed foods etc. would be quite expensive (given freight costs) - (not that I would desire to eat these on a tropical island!!!) - but what about general fruit, vegetables, rice, fish and meat? Are there local markets selling these goods and at what price (cheaper/more expensive than mainland Australia?) or can one generally only buy from grocery stores?

Thanks for any information!

HI!

Christmas Island more or less mirrored the rates of Australia mainland, albeit a little more pricey, due to its isolation but you don't need to pay astronomical prices for anything.

A cup of Asian coffee is about A$2-3. A plate of fried rice is about A$5.
A can of softdrink is about A$1.50-2.

Yes, there is one supermarket on the island and about a handful of grocery stores.

You're welcome to take a look at my Christmas Island page.
