| Brisbane | do you need a car living in brisbane? Posted: Tue September 25, 2007 11:57 PM UTC
I am moving to Brisbane next year. Is it necessary to have a car to get around? How is the public transportation?

Brisbane has a very extensive bus network that covers the city.
In the CBD itself there is a free loop service that runs from 6am - 6pm weekdays. Brisbane’s train network is fast and efficient. The Citycats run the length of the river to the city and inner suburbs. It really depends where your planning to live, you can do without a car.

I agree that it definitely depends on where you are planning on living. Some of the new estates on the outskirts of Brisbane aren't very well serviced by public transport but if you're planning on living say within a ten mile radius of the city centre you should be fine. My car recently died and as I live in an inner city suburb (New Farm) I have opted to ge without a car, at least for a while to see how I get on using public transport. After about two months I have to admit that I don't miss the car in the slightest. I have a bus at my front door and the City Cats and ferries at my back door. Both of these link up with other transport to get me everywhere I need to go. For $25.60 a week I get a weekly ticket that takes me anywhere I want by either bus, train or ferry up to three zones from the City. (approx 12-14 kms). and for 7 days. I'm sold on public transport.

I actually sold my car when I first came to Brissy!
The public transport is quite good, I have found that up until I moved out of the city I had no real need for a car in Brissy unless I wanted to go on day trips.

If you want to live innercity as mentioned before, no, you won't need a car. I lived through the 70's without a car. You will need to hire to go anywhere else. ouside that 10km zone, and if you have family, yes, you will need a car.
