I had thought of stopping off a Xian; and then Xining (buying tickets separately for these 2 legs of the trip up to Lhasa). But I hear that Xining may just be a smaller version of what is already up in Tibet... or is Xining worth a visit?

Xining is worth to visit, the must see attractions are Qinghai lake and Ta'er Monastery.

It is difficult to get the train ticket to Lhasa from Xian, cause Xian is not the start station.

Yes, it's worth visiting. I recommend Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake and Ta'er Temple. If you want to go to Tibet from Xi'an by train, you'd better to ask a help from a good travel agent. But if you stop at Xining, it's easy to get a ticket from Xi'an.

Well then, would it be better to purchase the train ticket for Lhasa from Xining? I will be visiting the Shaolin Temple in Hunan Province (as I travel in from Shanghai and Nanjing]; and so, would it be better to travel to Xian from there or should I go to Beijing first and then go to Xian on my way to Xining and Lhasa?

Are you asking if you should do Beijing -- Xi'an -- Xining -- Lhasa, or Shanghai -- Nanjing -- Luoyang/Shaolin -- Xi'an -- Xining -- Lhasa? Both seem fine to me.
