I would like to rent a house on one of the islands, possibly Maui or Kauai, so that I can take my grandchildren. Any ideas.

There are many links on alternativehawaii.com also try vrbo.
While there are many rentals on Oahu, you may get better results going to the Kauai or Maui forums.
