Does anyone know of a gem of a hotel in or very close to Piazza Maggiore? I would like to surprise my fiancee with a trip in Nov. and the nice hotels are VERY expensive, the affordable ones are not located in the old center of the city... :-)

You are correct in saying that most hotels in the medieval centre of Bologna are expensive. To the best of my knowledge, there are none directly on Piazza Maggiore. We stayed in one(overnight)on Via IV Novembre. It's about 500 metres from Piazza Maggiore called the Art Hotel Orologio. They should have a website which you could check out. We were thoroughly satisfied.

Yes,
I'm actually from Bologna and used to be hotel secretary there. Mr Cocozza is right, the closest hotels are Hotel Commercianti (medieval style) ask and Hotel Orologio. Both belong to same company. If you prefer modern style, there is Hotel Novecento (100 mts from Hotel Orologio)Check out a room with a view. Here is their website, get a low season period to save money and check out special offers at www.bolognarthotels.it Claudia
