| Como | Lake Como vs Lake Garda Posted: Fri September 21, 2007 11:38 AM UTC
If you could only visit one of Lake Como or Lake Garda during an Italian tour, which would it be? And why? Where would you recommend to eat/stay? I'm planning a 25th wedding anniversary for next May and am looking for clean, safe, friendly accommodation and experiences (all on a budget)!!!
Thanks! |

I would definitely recommend Lake Como. I haven't been to Lake Garda, but I understand it is more commercial.
I went to Lake Como with my then-new-boyfriend seven years ago, and fell in love with both him and the place. We stayed for a week in Laglio, now home to George Clooney's villa I understand, in a reasonably priced hotel called Plinio du Lac. Laglio is a very pretty part of the lake, and the views from the huge hotel windows overlooking the lake are like oil paintings. We often look back on that holiday as though it were a dream, and we are waiting for the right occasion to re-visit. If you can afford one night of luxury, stay at Villa d'Este, the lake's most famous hotel. That's where I'm going on my anniversary. Yes, I married that same boyfriend last year. It is possibly one of the most romantic places I've ever been - a good place for an anniversary...

Agree with previous poster. I have not been to Lake Garda either but I have "google'd" Lake Como photo gallery and Lake Garda photo gallery, and Como is always on top. Varenna is my favorite - (shameless plug) I have some pix in my page, but you can also look at someone other VT'er pages or google for pix.
Varenna is very beautiful, easy, and romantic - and less crowded than Bellagio, of George Clooney fame. Nomad

I wouldn't hesitate one second: I would go to Lake Como (I have been to both lakes) and never get tired of going to Lake Como. One wonderful villa to visit is Villa Carlotta during the Azalea season...

I have visited both but returned to Lake Como many times. Have a look at my Varenna page for a feel of the place.
