I am looking for a really cheap place to stay - a good find. Should I stay in Thamel? If so, where?

Hi,
I stayed in the Happy Valley Hotel. Clean, Quiet, friendly and very helpful staff and right next door is a monastery. It is just behind the Bhodonath and a short taxi ride (10 - 15 Min) to Thamel. I paid $20/ per night. Here is their email if you want more info. Email says Khumbu, because they own the Happy Valley and the Khumbu... khumbuhotel@wlink.com.np Hope this is helpful for you Ron

With respect 20$ is so NOT cheap. There are many places is Thamel where you can get a room for 4/5 dollars. I do not stay in Thamel I stay in Freak Street where I pay 200nc (3$) for a single room with cable TV and attached bathroom. I have many friends who have stayed in Thamel and never paid more than 10$ for a decent room.
Hope this give you some idea of the prices.

I prefer to stay in Thamel, then you are close to places that you are likely to need, i.e. Trekking permit office, tourist busses to Pokhara,+ this is where most of the other travellers stay when in Kathmandu so a better choice of places to eat and a better chance of meeting up with fellow travellers
I stay at The Kathmandu View Hotel in North Thamel and pay less than $10 a night for a nice en-suite room with hot water, towels and toilet paper – How much less than $10 is down to you and your bargaining skills Details on my Nepal page under accommodation tips, But you can find cheaper places than this but not a nice !! Hope that helps – please feel free to drop me a line if you require more info Happy travels Rob

$20 is much too expensive. I'll take a look at the Kathmandu View Hotel and go from there. Hoping to pay 5-10 dollars. Thanks again!

Just returned from Nepal, I stayed at the Kathmandu View Hotel. The staff was kind and helpful. I kept my bag there while i went trekking. and i also made all my tickets and cashed travelers checks with the owner at a better rate than any of the places in Thamel. The hotel was recommended by Rob, a VT member.
