getting to Salzburg, Austria, from Rothenburg o.d.T. Posted: Wed September 19, 2007 01:59 PM UTC
We have been trying to find the best way to get from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Salzburg on Wednesday 10 October 2007. We are open to trains, planes, boats, hydrofoils, buses and rented cars. It seems it will take many connections regardless of what combination of transport modes we choose, so I am wondering what you might suggest.
Thanks in advance!

Rothenburg is on a branch line and Munich Hbf is a terminal station.
Cheapest would be to use regional trains:
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof
To: Salzburg
and select as means of transport "only local transport".
Than you could use the Bavaria Ticket for this trip. EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons.
A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria plus to/from Salzburg Hbf.
On a Wednesday the Bavaria Ticket is valid from 9am till 3am Thursday.

I looked at the Deutsche Bahn website, ,least number of changes is 2, dep R,burg at 1106 to Steinach, change and then to Munich Ost, change to Salzburg. At present the Sparpreis is E29 instead of the usual E61 so I,d book now if I were you and print off the ticket on your printer. (There are earlier trains but then 3 changes involved which is a nuisance with luggage.) Just remember that you must produce this printout and the credit card you used on the train, there will be a squiggly pattern on the printout which the conductor will scan with a little machine and he will also want to see the credit card.
To do all this go into the Deutsche Bahn website, click on international guests for the info in English, then follow the prompts, remember to select the correct Rothenburg on the dropdown menu.

Hadn,t noticed the previous reply but it,s true, if you are happy to change 3 times the Bavaria ticket would work out a lot cheaper. Sorry!

With a Eurail global saver pass, we should be able to take the 2-change trains for not much extra money. Right? We'll take your advice and get reservations. Thanks again!

The Bavaria ticket would cost a total of E27 for 2 whereas the cheaper ticket I mentioned wil be E56 for the 2 of you, but the Bavaria ticket will mean 3 changes. The time for the journey is much the same so if you don,t mind changing perhaps go the Bavaria ticket.
Usually using an IC means a much shorter trip but not in this instance. It looked like 5 - 6 hours in total regardless of which option you took.

Without any extra money.
You can reserve seats (EUR 3,50) online through the DB timetable. But this is only possible for the parts with far distance trains (IC/EC or ICE) on your route. No seat reservations with regional trains.
