Hi.
I will be visiting Italy in October of 2008. I will be staying at a villa in Lucca but would love to go to Austria. I'm not sure that I want to spend days there. Does anyone know how long it takes by train to get from Lucca to Salzburg? And, would making this a day trip be possible? Thanks |

It's quite a journey involving several changes.
The average time is 10 hours and the distance approx. 750 kms You may be better checking for flights from Florence to Salzburg

Dominic is quite right that there is no good way by rail to make this trip. Part of the problem is the location of Salzburg itself - it's usually easier to go to either end of Austria (i.e., Innsbruck and Vienna) than the middle (Salzburg and Welz). But in any case, it will take you 8 hours just to get to Innsbruck.
You might consider taking overnight trains, so that you go up to Innsbruck on on overnight train (from Florence), make your way across Austria, spending a night somewhere (like Salzburg), then taking the Allegro Tosca overnight train from Vienna back to Florence and then on to Lucca. This would give you two days and one night in Austria (although you would be away 3 nights). But even by air, this will be a hassle, unless you have the time to spare... Bill
