| Lago di Garda | How far, how long, how much and alternatives Posted: Tue September 11, 2007 02:14 PM UTC
I'll be landing at Bergamo airport via Ryanair on the 26 of September to Limone. What is the most direct and inexpensive means of doing this? I'm unable to drive. Thank you.

I think your best bet will be the train, especially if you have luggage.
The journey time is between 5.5 and 6.5 hours depending upon which service you use. There are no direct links from Bergamo to Limone and you will have a couple of changes en-route. The fare should be around 31 euros. Check out http://orario.trenitalia.com

Hi...I think domenico is right, the train should be a good bet to get there inexpensively.

I think the previous posters are accidently sending you to the wrong Limone!
The one they referring to is in the Piedmont region in the north west of Italy as opposed to Limome sul Garda which has no train station. I will be able to help you with travel, however I have to go to work just now. I will post information over the next couple of days. Regards, Billy

The origonal poster has not logged on since posting the question therefore I will not be doing their work for them unless they again ask me to.
This happens all too often! Bad day at work! Billy

I'd appreciate your answer Billy.
We have the same problem now that we have booked to go to Limone SG with Ryanair to Bergamo in July. Is there a coach service or would I need to hire a car? Also how do you get around the lake to visit places. Do numerous ferries criss cross from each village or do they just go to the main destinations like Malesecine, Limone etc. Phil...

Well Phil, it depends on several factors.
1) Are you travelling with children 2) Do you speak alittle italian 3) Have you driven on mainland europe before 4) Would you feel confident using the public transport system 6) Are you and your fellow travellers the adventurous types. If the answers to the first 3 is yes and the others no then I would reccommend hiring a car. Your route can be found at the rather large link below http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/dyn/con If you want to use public transport than you will need to take the bus from the bus to the train station (15min at 1.50E). You then have 2 choices, travel to Brescia (app 1 hour at 3.50E) or to Desenzano del Garda (app 1hour 30mins at 5.85E). All train times and prices can be found at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html At Brescia train station there is a bus station where you will want to take the infrequent but reliable bus to Limone. The timetable is found at http://www.trasportibrescia.it/upload/orari/estivi/LN012.pdf If travelling to Desenzano then you will find the bus stop directly outside the small train station. Again the timetable can be found at http://ctw08.dti.unimi.it/desenzano_riva.pdf The starting point Desenzano FS means train station. With regard to using ferries, the website which currently showing the winter timetable or orari is found at http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/gar/nlg.html If you do decide to use public transport remember to factor in you return journey especially if you have an early return flight. I have frequently spent my last night in Bergamo itself to take the stress out of the equation. It's a beutiful place in its own right. I hope this is of some help and if I can assist any further don't hesitate to reply here in this forum. Regards, Billy PS All fares mentioned above are one way per adult.

Thanks Billy. That's very thorough.
I know enough Italian to make Italians despair and me embarrassed but I can struggle through. Usually we get an airport coach to as near the hotel as possible then walk if it's not too far. We used the train to reach Florence from Pisa two years ago and found that convienient and brilliant but I fear this excursion may be somewhat different. I'll go through your advice when I get five minutes and jot some notes down but the way it's looking I may need to hire a car. There's just the two of us going but my wife is disabled. She can walk but not too far because it tires her out. We usually take city breaks but having done a week in Paris last September we found it was too much for her and decided to take a more relaxed break this time. I think I might be wrong there. Once I've gone through your recommendations I'll get back to you. Phil...

I neglected to mention that there is a bus service from the airport to Brescia.
There are 5 per day and they may well fit in with your flight times. The fare is 10 euros per person each way with the journey taking approx 1 hour. The timetable can be found at http://www.autostradale.it/interna.aspx?gr=2&s Billy
