Mainz Will be coming in Mainz this October...need inputs please
Posted: Sun September 9, 2007 08:30 AM UTC
Hi, can anyone give feedback on the services, facilities and location of Contel Mainz? How far is it from the city center, old town, rhine river, park, etc.? Almost all affordable hotels are fully booked by October, and glad we found this in the internet.

What is the weather in October be? We will be there 1st of the month til around 3rd to 4th week..do we need to bring our winter clothes/heavy jackets?

Any shops where i can buy Berndes and other quality kitchenwares?

I heard that buying bus tickets by bulk is cheaper..so how do we do that and where do we buy it?

Your hotel seems to be close to the bus stop "Am Fort Gonzenheim" (bus line #65).

> How far is it from the city center, old town, rhine river, park, etc.?
750 - 1000 m

No. But a light jacket for sure.

> I heard that buying bus tickets by bulk is cheaper.
You can buy four single tickets at once for a small discount.
But if you will stay 3 or 4 weeks there it will be more economical and also more comfortable to buy weekly or a monthly pass.
Weekly pass for RMV zone 65 (Mainz and Wiesbaden) is EUR 19,00.
Monthly pass is EUR 63,00.
There is also a past 9am monthly pass (cheaper), but with the restriction of beeing valid only past 9am on weekdays.
In case you want to commute to Frankfurt you will need tickets/passes covering 5 zones.

There are only local public transport tickets valid one or more zones. No tickets just for the buses. Local public transport tickets do cover:
- regional trains (RB, RE)
- S-Bahn trains
- trams
- buses

Cannot help you with shops in Mainz, but you will be able to find what you look for.

Hi,

if you are talking about Contel on the "Wall Street" (Wallstrasse), then I can probably give you some additional info. I live and work not too far away from Mainz downtown, and a lot of business guests have stayed at the hotel. They were all quite happy with the quality and service.

Their "Trattoria Da Arnaldo" is one of my favorite Italian eating places in town, and the prices are really reasonable.

Please bear in mind that Wallstrasse is located on a hill, which can make a short walking distance feel like two or three times longer when going back to the hotel.

> Any shops where i can buy Berndes and other quality kitchenwares?

You can go to one of these shops. Ask for directions at your hotel.

- Karstadt
- WMF (no Berndes, but WMF is a good brand, too)

Contact me at batavia_rose@yahoo.de if you need any further specific information

Happy travels!

thanks for the info Batavia_rose.
where is Contel exactly located? Is it very near the old town, city center, rhine river, park, etc., where me & my toddler can just go to anytime of the day? do they have facilities english speaking staff to accomodate our inquiries?

hi,

here is how to walk to the area around ludwigstrasse, where you would find the WMF shop and karstadt for your kitchenware shopping ;))

it's around 2 - 2.3 km

don't mind the u-turn suggested by google maps, unless you are driving to the destination

as for the contel staff, to my knowledge all of them speak english (actually most hotel staff in most german hotels do)

cheers
jo

thanks again for the info. would that mean that it is quite far going to the city center/old town by walking? we don't intend to rent a car & drive. we'll just take the bus within mainz & weisbaden.

if you have a push chair, going down the hill won't feel that far. however, going back to the hotel can be quite challenging to some people. there is a bus stop right in front of the contel if i remember right (you might have to cross the street), ask the receptionist for information. riding the bus is quite convenient so i wouldn't rent a car if i were just to explore the city area. -jo

Thanks again Jo. I'm thinking now if it would be easier for me & my toddler to stroll around and walk to the city center/old town, given the hotel's location. I have a few questions again and hope it wouldnt bother you so much.
Is there any park near the hotel where i can have him play & run?
What is the weather now in Mainz? Im starting to pack things for my son, and im not sure if i need to bring thermals and winter jacket for him. Do we need to dress up in layers by October?

Hi there,

Contel Mainz is in the city center itself. You will not have a problem in going around. Weather will still be nice in October. No heavy jackets. Light ones will do. There are many stores downtown Mainz that you can buy quality kitchenwares and buying bus tickets for a group is much cheaper. You can buy it directly from the bus stop machine.

If you are looking for accomodation, let me know. You can e-mail me at: yasin.dk@hotmail.com
