| Palermo | Safety around the port Posted: Sat September 8, 2007 02:31 PM UTC
We will be arriving in Palermo port mid Oct. at 6:30 AM from Naples.
Since we cannot drop our luggage, two rollaboards, until 9 am, we thought we would have a coffee and then walk the 20 minutes to our B&B. Is this safe. The B&B is directly down Via Emerico Amari. |

I should think, by the time you have disembarked, it's going to be 7.30am.
Palermo will be starting it's rush hour and there will be a lot of people around. I doubt if anyone will take any notice of you. Just use common sense, and keep your luggage with you at all times.

Just re-read your post. I thought you were on a cruise - obviously not. Same rules apply, it just means you will disembark a lot quicker.

I agree with Dom that you shouldn't have a problem. I was there most recently in spring, on a cruise ship that stayed two days. I walked (often by myself) between the port and the various areas of downtown at least 6-8 times during daylight, and had no problems at all. If I recall correctly, Amari is one of the major streets, which I would stick to rather than back alleys -- as in any big city. Palermo is quite nice, with lots to see, and I'm looking forward to another Sicily visit just as soon as I have time. Have fun!

According to the grandistazioni.it website (this is the company that runs the 13 largest stations in Italy, including Palermo Centrale), the Left Luggage office ("Deposito Bagagli") opens at 6 a.m in the station, so you do have the option of leaving your stuff there for 3.80 euro (each) for the first 5 hours.
On the other hand, I have to agree with the others that you are unlikely to have a problem, if you keep your "New York" face on (i.e., "don't mess with me, because we know what we're doing" ;-) ). Thieves in Italy - who are unfortunately a nuisance - would much rather pick your pockets than steal your rollaboards full of your dirty underwear ;-) Bill
