We are visiting Malcesine for a week in Sept and I would like some information onstight seeing. How long is the journey to Vience and is it better to join a guided tour or to use local transport. Also hoe long is the journey from Malcesine to Rome and is it possible to take a day to visit Rome.
Thanks Hilary

You could just about do a day trip to Venice but I think Rome is a bit too far, unless you can afford the flight from Verona.

As you only have a week in Malcesine you'll have plenty to keep you occupied.

If you want to make an excursion why not take in an opera in Verona. We did when we were there in July.

You should give yourselves a day to explore Monto Baldo, there's a great cable car up to the top and you can walk down, although it did take us about 5 hours.

Then you need a day or two to take the ferries and explore the other beautiful towns around Lake Garda.

You should have a great time. One good tip would be to bring some beach shoes, e.g. crocs, as the shoreline around the lake can be rocky and slippy and the shoes take out all the hard work of getting in and out of the lake.

All the best

It's at least 4.5 hours from Verona to Rome by train, plus getting to Verona from Malcesine. Frankly, with security and all the waiting around, flying won't be a whole lot faster, so a day trip to Rome is out...unless....

In my younger days, this is what I would have done:
Take the Express train leaving Verona at 22:37 and which arrives at Roma Tiburtina at 06:09. Spend the day larking about Rome. Then take the InterCityNight train called Marco Polo from Rome Tiburtina at 22:50, and either get off in Padova at 04:50 to take a regional train back to Verona (arrive at 06:47) or take the Marco Polo all the way to Venice where it arrives at 05:24, drink some very strong coffee and start sightseeing there ;-)

For normal adults, this is insane...but I was young and crazy once ;-)

Ciao a tutti!

Agree. Rome is too far for a day trip.
Venice is easy: up to sept 28th there is also a very handy direct bus: http://www.aptv.it/pdf/Riva-ve.pdf

Take it, and do the rest by yourself: but do your homeworks on a guide or two, and of course on the VT tips.

Don loose Verona, and take a look at my Torri page for just a few more ideas just around the corner.
No opera though. The season is over.
Enjoy!
Francesco

P.S. Ciao Bill! Allora, devo stappare l'amarone?
