From what I recall, there are 3 different "classes" of train you can take to Machu Picchu. The local train is just that -- truly for locals. Although much cheaper, I don't believe we were even able to purchase tickets for this train. Plus, the local trains were older and there are no assigned seats. I believe the next class is backpacker, which is what we took. It was new, very comfortable and clean and there are assigned seats. The most expensive train was the Hiram Bingham, which is truly 1st class and includes a dining car where meals are served. I think the cost of that train was $500. Go with the backpacker -- it's a great ride and make sure you sit next to a window on the left side of the train (if you are facing in the direction the train will be traveling) for the views.

I would recommend the Vista Dome. A fashion show on the return trip. And a drink and a snack. Get a blanket onboard because it is A/C to the max. Comfortable and good service. I think it is worth it-after all it is a 4 hour journey and you need energy once you get there to climb MP.
Good luck and definitel reserve in advance. Had we not reserved, we wouldnt have been able to get on...

read my honest observation of both trains in my M.P. page. Click on me then look to the map on the right and click in M.P. transportation. Its not the brochure facts but facts none the less.
