| Michigan | Border Crossing Posted: Thu September 6, 2007 02:30 PM UTC
We will be driving end of Sept. from New Jersey via Canada to Detroit. Any ideas if reentering the US is better via Windsor or via Sarnia/ Port Huron as far as waiting times, etc. are concerned. We hold EU Passports. We do not mind the possible detour.
Thanks a lot |

Neither Michigan crossings are any prize when it comes to waiting. It can be hours depending on what time of day. But you don't have much choice on that end of the 401 / 402. At Sarnia I get a bit nervous about sitting on that bridge that is full of trucks loaded with tons of goods after the bridge collapse in Minnesota. In regards to crossing below Monteal. Yes,there is a good chance some of the crossings from NE New York or NW Vermont will have less traffic at times, but beware any instructions to cross at crossings without a reporting office. There are many in this area like one 500 ft from my summer home. But it is a good place to get lost and if you get caught crossing at the wrong place could cost you Hundreds of $$ in fines and possibly time in jail.
Good Luck .........Jon Alburg, Vt and Spring Hill, Florida

A friend of mine just crossed recently at the Sarnia/Port Huron crossing, said it was very easy, relatively quick crossing, so you might consider that. Good luck!

I have never had good luck with the Port Huron crossing. But I'm sure it is all a matter of timing. During rush hour the radio always seems to report 2 hour waits on the blue water bridge.
You might want to look at Yahoo maps and check out the real time traffic for a few days before you leave, within the time frame you plan to be crossing the bridge to get a general idea.
