My husband and I will be arriving in St. Bart's in January aboard the Quest. We are interested in touring the island with a private guide or hiring an English speaking taxi driver to show us the island. Any one know of a tour guide or have info on the cost and availability of taxis? Thanks, Lu

Best to bargain with the taxi driver. Once you get to St Bart's, the driver usually can give you a personal tour for under 100 for the day. There is also a tourist's office right at the port. They are friendy and can offer you several options. The island isn't big so you can go abouts in one day. However, the roads are windy and some overlooking cliffs, so I wouldn't advise to drive!

We were in St. Bart's in August and met a wonderful driver, Jean Claude (JC). He has his own taxi service and provides island tours, hourly point-to-point rates, and is fluent in both French and English.

He was recommended to us by another taxi driver when we were looking for someone to accommodate our large party with a van during the evening and early morning hours.....JC came to our rescue!

He's a very interesting character, and knows the island really well----he's somewhat of a local celebrity there and I'm sure you can negotiate a good rate with him. But since you're traveling during the busy January season, I'd recommend booking him ahead of time. He might still be in Asia at this time, but perhaps you can drop him an email.

That's great Lu, I hope you can set something up with JC. I actually have a photo of him on my Transportation tip under my St. Barths page.

Also, the gentlemen at Premier IV are an EXCELLENT resource for your stay on St. Barths. They helped us out tremendously in setting up our airport VIP service, and planning my big b'day party before we arrived. They seem to do everything: Arrange tours, book dinner reservations (and during high season you want to be sure to have dinner reservations set up ahead of time at some of the more popular restaurants on the island.)

All of them are extremely helpful, and Vincent Chevalier, their VP of Guest Services is a doll and adds a lot of personal touch to their service. He came by and personally greeted us during my birthday party at Le Yacht Club just to make sure everything was as I hoped it would be and that I was enjoying it. I've kept in contact with them as I know I'll be using their services for my next visit to the island.

Heard from JC, but at 100 euros per hour, he kind of priced himself right out of the ball park! Thanks for the lead, but a day's touring is more than I would care to spend! The cruise excursions were high priced, but he beat them! I guess he must be pretty good to demand that kind of money! Lu

Sorry, I misquoted JC's fees. He requests 70 euros per hour, or $100.00 which is our current exchange rate! Still, too high for a day of touring an island! Thanks, Lu

Wow..no wonder that JC can afford to spend months traveling all over Asia! ;-)

He must be in high demand during the high season to be able to charge that rate. Maybe you can negotiate a rate with the gentlemen at "Premium IV" Concierge services or they can recommend another Tour company for you.

I actually came across a business card from one of our taxi drivers in St. Barths and noticed that she does "Island Tours." I remember she picked up our group from our hotel and took us into downtown Gustavia. Just a one-way trip but she gave me her business card in case we needed her services again during our stay. Her name is Liliane and her business card says:

Might be worthwhile giving her a call and comparing rates.
