| Naxos Island | Hikes & Accommodation in the interior part of Island Posted: Mon September 3, 2007 02:36 AM UTC
Hello fellow travellers - Wondering what hikes are good in the interior part of Naxos (Moni, Halki, Apieranthos) & if anyone can recommend accommodation in the small villages.
To tour the interior is it best to take a bus, rent a car, take a taxi (are there taxis?) or rent a bicycle. Looking forward to hearing from you! |

Rovingpolly, the best hike guide I have found is put together by some wonderful scandinavian guy here's the link, it also has photos of landmarks along the way...
he does good hikes for other islands http://www.cycladen.be/NaxosEng.htm I did the short one, up to the monastery, but friends have done longer ones. About accommodation in small villages, I don't know. The printed guide that currently gives the most detail about Naxos interiors says rooms are not advertised; that in Moni you would have to ask in the 4 tavernas in town; in Apiranthos, in the cafe or embroidery shop. I gather u would be doing this for convenience, not to chum up to the locals... I think unless you speak some greek your interaction would not be too much. The transportation question depends a lot on how much time you have, and how tight your budget is. The busses pretty much go up in the morning, back at night, with 1-2 in between, so you'd have to time it right. If u know the route you can flag it down anywhere along. Point is, using the bus, you don't have much flexibility... it's better if you have more time. If you have less time than money, you can explore more with Car rentals. If u can drive a stick-shift can be as low as 25E per day in May or September. Naxos is so hilly, I have never seen a bicycle for rent. A scooter is OK for tootling just along the shore tothe various beaches, but along the mountainous spine of the island... not so much.
