Re: Is Montpellier a "big city"? Is downtown really carfree? Posted: Tue September 4, 2007 12:10 AM UTC
Automobiles are not allowed downtown Montpellier. All roads leading to the city center end in one of the many underground parking lots. The traffic, and it can be frustrating, is in the surrounding areas, particularly to the west.
Montpellier is a major city of the Languedoc area of France. I do not consider it a compelling tourist destination but as with most cities, there are indeed museums and shopping and "things to do".
As to the question of its size, any answer is totally subjective. It may be indeed large to some, and not so large to others. It is a growing urban area with an ever increasing business presence. For tourists, I believe there are really better places to spend precious vacation time, i.e. Avignon, Aix en Provence, Arles, or Uzes.
