Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Montpellier Is Montpellier a "big city"? Is downtown really carfree?
Posted: Sun September 2, 2007 04:48 PM UTC
Ive read quite a bit about Montpellier and some people say its such a large city or at least a big city whereas other people say it's a fairly small place. Ive tried comparing it to the city where I live (100,000 habitants but the size of it is actually bigger)..this got me wondering..is Montpellier more of a big or a small city? I realize the answer to this question might be a bit difficult lol...

I also read that the use of cars was discouraged and that it was one of the few cities which are car-free, however Ive also read about traffic jams lol. I assume it is car-free in downtown? How much of Montpellier is car-free? this really got me curious, b/c if its car-free I would like it even more.

Automobiles are not allowed downtown Montpellier. All roads leading to the city center end in one of the many underground parking lots. The traffic, and it can be frustrating, is in the surrounding areas, particularly to the west.

Montpellier is a major city of the Languedoc area of France. I do not consider it a compelling tourist destination but as with most cities, there are indeed museums and shopping and "things to do".

As to the question of its size, any answer is totally subjective. It may be indeed large to some, and not so large to others. It is a growing urban area with an ever increasing business presence. For tourists, I believe there are really better places to spend precious vacation time, i.e. Avignon, Aix en Provence, Arles, or Uzes.

Hi

Inner city is about 200,000. Adding the the suburbs takes it to 450,000.

The inner city is not 100% pedestrian, but it is difficult to negotiate and expensive to park.

There is a good public transport system : http://the-languedoc-page.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=839
