Punta Arenas Megdeiena vs Otway
Posted: Sun September 2, 2007 02:18 PM UTC
Need ASAP so I can book.

Megdeiena tour or Otway tour, which is better for seeing and photographing Penguins?

Will be arriving early November by cruise ship. The ship offers Megdeiena and a tour company offers Otway. This could be a once in a life time trip.

Thanks, Robin

We just visited Seno Otway (with our own rental car from Punta Arenas) on December 9th. It is located about 65 km's from Pt Arenas and did tale more than 1 hour.
Once in Otway you will have to stay on walkways; sometimes the penguins were very close to us, but that is not sure at all. Of course you will see hundreds of these cute animals, sometimes from lookouts.

What I have seen from Magdalena Island - accessible by a boat trip of 2 hours !! - did look more impressive. I just can recommend to find more information (on VT or Google for instancre 'penguins magdalena') about this destination and make a decision.

happy travels

The colony on Isla Magdalena is larger but it does take nearly 2 hours to get to it. If the weather is bad you won't be able to go. Otway is close to PA and you can get to it with a tour, taxi or even public transport. If you don't get seasick, I'd try for Isla Magdalena as it is much more impressive. But Otway is still amazing and you won't be disappointed with either of them.
