You would be better to plan on the safe side and book prior to arriving. Many of the Cusco based tour operators have web sites where you can book. Try this one, they are very reliable
http://www.perutreks.com/inca_trail_04d_prices_2008.html

This is a good general web site for more travel information on Peru

As for travel between Lima and Cusco depends on how much time you have to spend. The quickest and easiest way is to fly, check www.lan.com for fares between the two cities. The intercity buses can be comfortable but obviously take much longer.

You would be well served to check the travel pages here of other VT'ers and you will find loads of helpful information.

I can recommend www.incaexplorers.com, a woman owned/run company in Cusco.

The bus from Cusco-Lima takes about a week. We took it and had most excellent adventures.

The trek should be booked as soon as possible, yes.

Cusco-Lima by bus a week? Probably with multiple stops....
It takes 20 hours more or less.

Flying takes around 1 hour. Several airlines.
You may want to check my Peru (and Lima) transportation pages.

Hi. We did the Cusco-book local to MP trip and we managed to do well. Visit Peru rail and make your booking for vistadome in advance.

Book on LAN/Aerocondor or an airline of your choice. About 100$ one way full fare, but they do run specials-so check out the web.

Hotel--look on-line.

Youll have a great time
