Hello,
In a nutshell: Taipei to Hualien by Train. Hualien to Taroko Gorge by tour bus, taxi, scooters or (don't ever try it) on foot. Hualien to Taichung by Taxi, Bus or Plane. Taichung to Sun Moon Lake by Bus. or Taichung to Chiayi. Then go up Alishan. If time permits go downwards to Kaohsiung. "Shoot" yourself back to Taipei using the Bullet Train. (less then 2 hours) This is just a brief itinerary. Happy Travels!

Hi Scott,
If I'm not wrong, there are buses that go from Hualien to TaiChung. Then from TaiChung, there are many buses/coaches that goes to ChiaYi. When my family(4 in total) came, we took a cab that brought us from Hualien to Taichung (NT6000). It's cheap compared to a NT2000 air ticket person. The taxi ride was just amazing! We went through mountain passes, never-ending mountain roads, majestic mountain peaks(3000m!) and drove above a sea of clouds. There are no train services serving the Hualien-Taichung leg. cheers

Sorry Babe. There are no any taxi ride that goes from Hualien to Chiayi. If there was one, I reckon it would take close to a day to do that.
