This would be our first trip to Latin America and would like to know of safe locations to stay in Sao Paulo.

I would also like to know of any Indian restaurant nearby that place.

The new area that is considered the center for business and commerce is between Avenida Paulista and Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima, and includes areas with good bars and restaurants such as Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, Bixiga, Jardins, Itaim Bibi. So any of these districts would be reasonably safe by just taking the normal precautions. I would avoid the old center of town that is referred to as Centro. . This is the old center, and is now very run down in parts and has little to offer. Not sure that Sao Paulo is really a center for Indian cuisine, steaks, Italian and Sushi yes. The only Indian place that I know of is Ganesh in the Morumbi Shopping Center. Maybe other VT'ers will know of others.

Hi, I would recommend someplace near Av. Paulista which is near the downtown (Centro).
Please, don't be afraid of visiting downtown because many interesting places as Se Cathedral, Teatro Municipal and Pateo do Colégio are located there. Maybe you'll see some homeless people, but definitely its not dangerous as it seems to be. Try visiting São Bento Church and hear the Gregorian Mass Song even if you have a different religion.
Regarding Indian restaurants, I just know Ganesh (http://www.ganesh.com.br) and Tantra (http://www.bairrovilaolimpia.com.br/HTMRESTAURANTES/HPSALIBE/TantraRestaurante/TantraRestaurante.htm) this is actually more hindu condiments than dishes at all. But I heard about Tandoor (www.tandoor.com.br) which I suppose that's more like typical hindu's food.
I wish you a nice time in São Paulo!
