Those who visited Takayama for the October Festival, or those who just happen to live in the area: do the leaves turn at the beginning of October or later? Takayama's tourist page says "early Sept- early Oct". I think it's BS. No way it can start so early. Or can it?

Hello, I checked the webpage you mentioned and it said "Leaves turn red in Norikura..." Norikura is 2700 m high mountain and leaves there normally start turning red 1 month earlier than other places.
But, autumnal leaves season may be late this year as temperature is not likely to go down soon.
