Fuji Quick Stop Near Fuji
Posted: Tue August 28, 2007 04:47 AM UTC
I will be in Japan in a couple weeks and would really love to see Mt. Fuji, but time does not permit any significant visit. I will be travelling with my wife, my 1 year old daughter, and my mother-in-law. We will be travelling by shinkansen from Nagoya to Tokyo and I would like to stop off at one of the stations near Mt. Fuji and enjoy Mt. Fuji as best we can for maybe a couple hours. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be a really scenic view of Fuji, perhaps a restaurant with a nice view, or an area that provides a scenic overlook, anyplace that will not be too difficult to get to from any shinkansen station between the cities I mentioned? Thanks!

On your way to Tokyo, you can get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji on your left-hand side when shinkansen passes Shizuoka station. Nihondaira, 30 min bus from Shizuoka station is known for a great view of Mt. Fuji.

Don't count on being able to see the mountain for sure. It may be covered with clouds. We were in the Hakone area for 3 days and it was rainy and cloudy. My friend has been there a couple of times and couldn't see it too.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I realize that it is very likely we won't be able to see Mt. Fuji, but we are hoping for some good luck.

I looked at the picture of Mt. Fuji from Nihondaira, it is very beautiful. Is the best view of the mountain from this distance? It looks like it is still off in the distance, although you do get a good view of it from there. Before you mentioned this place, I was thinking about getting off at the Fuji or Mishima station.

Thanks for the advice!

As it is a big mountain, it can be seen better from a certain distance, I think...
Of course, you can see Mt.Fuji from Mishima station and Shin-Fuji station.
Mt. Fuji from Mishima station

And Mt. Fuji from Shin-Fuji station (scroll down, pls)

Note that only KODAMA (slowest shinkansen) stops at Shin-Fuji and Hikari (2nd fastest) which stops at Mishima is not frequent (about 6 services a day). Hikari stops at Shizuoka station every hour. NOZOMI (fastest shinkansen) does not stop at these stations at all.
