| Trieste | IF we go to Trieste for a couple of days .. Posted: Mon August 27, 2007 08:15 PM UTC
.. and I am very keen, is it easy to find James Joyce pilgrimage sites? Ask at the tourist info booth perhaps?
Or maybe there is a guided walk? Also - any other literary pilgrimage sites? And maybe a clue or two about some great but cheapish accomodation? If you can help, much appreciated. |

for James Joyce in Trieste, you'll find a lot in this great link by a woman writer:
http://www.gonomad.com/features/0602/trieste.html You might enjoy the Cafe San Marco, where Claudio Magris (born in Trieste) hung out. His "Danube" is my favourite, a book I'll always have with me. Italo Svevo (Zeno's Conscience) is also from Trieste. He wasn't well received when he first published. James Joyce taught him English at the Trieste Berlitz School and encouraged him, brought his books to the attention of Paris literary world where Svevo was acclaimed. My hotel in Trieste was a sort of pensione in town, very inexpensive, 2 large beds, one floor up from the street. Very accommodating lady. Too bad I can't remember its name but there are many others. Minutes walk from the bus terminal where we left for the beautiful coast of Slovenia! Sir Richard (Burton) the explorer is linked to Trieste too.

Jen, you might also want to check out the Trieste page of Paoseo. She is a native and delightful young woman whom we met with Berni and Carl in Padova. She has a list of 3 caffes which are part of the historic literary/artistic scene. we only got to Caffee San Marco but it was great. I can't remember the name of our hotel, but it was fairly inexpensive and centrally located. I will look it up and post it as well.

Well the place is called Furlan Giordano and is about 35 Euro per night per person. It includes a very basic breakfast, bread with butter and jam I think and coffee. It was all pretty good but they also had some sort of carbonated orange drink which was awful. It is hard to find on the web, but can be done with Google. It was very centrally located and just down the street from Caffe San Marco.
