| Puerto Iguazú | crossing the border from Argentina to Brazil at igacu falls Posted: Mon August 27, 2007 03:15 PM UTC
This maybe a stupid question but a little confused with requirements for entering and leaving countries whilst trevelling.
At the start of 2008 my girlfriend and I are beginning our world trip in Argentina. We are planning to end up at the Iguazu falls for 3-5 days, staying on both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides before flying on to Manaus Brazil. Will we be able to cross the border after staying in Puerto Igazu for 2 nights and then continue our travels in Brazil, or will we need to have pre booked a flight out of Argentina before entering the country. We are arriving in Argentina on the 2nd of January. Hoping someone can help with our inexperience? Any recommendations on accommodation both sides of the falls would also be great |

I can not imagine you will have problems leaving the country. We did the same: arriving by plane in Bs As and leaving by bus to Pt. Natales in Chile. As far as I can remember we got a 'kind of visum', which we had to hand over when leaving Argentina.
For acommodations you could read the tips on the VT pages about these destinations. happy travels Jaap

The websites for both parks on listed on my travel pages but have listed them him and think you will find them of help.
http://www.iguazuargentina.com/ http://www.fozdoiguacu.pr.gov.br/turismo/ing/ As for accommodations really depends on how much you want to spend. The best choices are the hotels located in each park, but as you might imagine they are also rather expensive. So you may wish to search www.tripadvisor.com for hotel ratings for both sides of the falls. suerte SAM

No problems crossing from Puerto Iguazu to Foz do Iguacu, but you may need a visa for Brazil depending on your nationality. We didn't need an onward flight at of Argentina in order to enter, (but we did have an onward flight out of Brazil). My husband and I did this crossing last August (2006) and yes we needed Visas for Brazil (Australians). We got our Visa in Buenos Airies which necessitated us staying in BA for a week (which was fine). There are very frequent buses from Puerto Iguazu to Foz (eg about every half hour) and it takes only about 5 minutes to get to the border crossing where you will have to get off the bus with your packs and go through the formalities (20-30 minutes)and then get the next bus coming through to Foz; - a lot of locals did not get off the bus at the border and the bus continued on. You may wish to consider trying to plan to be on the Argentinian side around the time of full moon for ranger led full moon walk to the falls - we booked this but unfortunately when we got to the park the cloud cover was such it was cancelled.
Also I don't think you need 5 days there. I would suggest 2 full days on the Argentinian side and 1/2 to 1 full day on the Brazilian side maximum. I would highly recommend that on your way up towards the falls that you take in a few days at San Carlos de Pellegrini in the Esteros del Ibera (accessed from Mercedes) which is an absolutely fantastic wetland area with great animal watching opportunities. You might also want to stop at San Ignacio Mini & visit the Jesuit ruins there and in the vicinity. There are plenty of accomodation options. We stayed at a place called Colonial Residential Hotel which was about 150 metres up the hill from the bus station, it cost 60 Argentine pesos for a double including breakfast, nice room with bathroom, airconditioning and tv. We didn't stay in Foz as we took an overnight bus to Curitiba. Where are you getting the flight to Manauas from and have you got that booked? Cheers

Thanks Annia, and everyone else.
I was planning to fly from either side of the falls up to Manaus but under a presumption that this was possible.....perhaps its not. I am now researching this unless anyone knows?
