Garmisch-Partenkirchen werdenfels castle

Does anyone know where the ruins of the castle are located? Is it a reasonable hike/walk from the center of town. Are there any places to eat nearby? We are a group of twelve and not terribly athletic, but we would like to see something other than the insides of bars
Thanks for your help.

I have to admit I,ve seen enough Castles to last me a lifetime and don,t know this one, but Garmisch is a wonderful place, the town is lovely to walk around, numerous Pubs, restaurants, and numerous day trips to nearby Castles like Linderhof or a little further away, Neuschwanstein . Also the train trip up the Zugspitze, Germany,s highest mountain, on a cogwheel train is good fun, the train runs every hour. If you have a few days there go into the Tourist office and get some info as there is a lot to see in the area.

It's a ruin and located north of the town with a good view across the valley. There are some information boards and it's free to get in. There's a bar next door which is handy for beer but I can't recall them doing much in the way of food. It's on the westerm slopes of the valley going up towards Munich and overlooks Burgrain. It's walkable from the centre and whilst there is a gradient it shouldn't defeat you. From Marienplatz in Garmisch I would say it's about 3 to 4 kilos and would take about an hour. Get yourself a Wanderkarte from the station bookshop and choose your route. The paths are well signposted. I've posted a few walks on the forum that may help on where to go. If you go to the ruin go on to Pflegersee for lunch and some beers.

I checked my forum pages and there's a brief description of the walk to add some more detail. For the less athletic I recommend the Alpspitz cable car and the walk down. It's a good day out and the walk has plenty of places to stop for a breather. All the bars have terraces so unless it's slapping down with rain you'll hardly see the inside of them! Garmisch is a great walking area and most of the paths or trails have bars so you don't have to hump a survival four-pack or two with you. Enjoy!
