Ankara Traveling to Ankara
Posted: Sat August 25, 2007 07:17 AM UTC
I'm a 36 year old female currently living in the US. In December of 2007 I'll be traveling to Ankara, Turkey. I'll be there visiting for almost 2 weeks. This will be my first time traveling overseas. I recently applied for my US passport (Aug. 6) and I should be receiving it sometime in November. I've already purchased my roundtrip plane ticket. Any tips, comments, suggestions I should be aware of? Before traveling, while I'm there, and when I leave. Thank you.

First of all I want to wellcome you to my Ankara.
You can say that I have a friend in Ankara and depart happly.
On the other hand if you dont have a specific duty or task 2 weeks in Ankara is too much. 2 or 3 days are enought to explore Ankara. For that reason I advice you to visit the historical ancient places arond Ankara.
1- Konya only 3 hours away. ıs the centre of whirling derwisches of Mevlana ( see my Konya page)

2- Cappadocia the moon landsscape or land of Fairychimneys. The capital city of the region is Nevsehir. There is every 2 hours bus to Cappadocia. It takes 5 hours. The other world famous towns in Cappa are Urgup, Goreme, Uchisar, Avanos. You can rest in a cave horel 2 or 3 days balooning and wondering around fairychimneys. very intersting palce to visit and a must.

3- Denizli or ancient Hiaropolis the Pamukkale/ Cotton burg which is only 5 hours away.

4- ISTANBUL = Take the night train you will be in istanbul at 08:30. You can stay in Istanbul 2-3 days. It is a must.

5- EPHESUS= The antic Roman city which is 10-12 hours away from Ankara. With night bus you will be there in the morning. You can stay at the town of Selcuk which is only 7 kms to the ruins. Home of Virgin Mary and church and grave of St. John is also in Selcuk.

Have a nice time in Ankara

I forgot to add:
In December Turkey is very cold. It rains it snows hard. You will need your winter coats. or you can buy in Ankara.
PS the universal dry age also hit Turkey. We dont know if it will rain or snow this winter. If not? Allah the Almighty forgive and help us.

Have to agree with the other replies to your post. Ephesus, Capadocia, Konya are all really cool. Istanbul is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Turkey is the greatest, we named our daughter Dalyan after the cutest beach town ever in the south of the country.

Around Ankara, Hattusa & Gordion are very neat. If you are willing to pay for airfare, 95% of Turkey is within 2 hrs of Ankara & Ankara's airport is my favorite . In addition to the places mentioned, I'd also try to see the Black Sea region (I liked Trabzon & Rize), Gaziantep, and Fethiye Bay (didn't like the town itself much)

If you have any questions, email me.
