| Havana | visa vs casas Posted: Sat August 25, 2007 01:15 AM UTC
hello all,
In a weeks time im heading out to windswept havana, trying to sort out a visa but realise you have to have a place booked on arrival. what confuses me is does it have to be a state run hotel or can it be with a hostel or a casa particulares? I would much rather stay in a casa from the word go are casa owners willing to send a confirmation email and if so does the embassy except it? If not can anyone recommend a hotel that is cheap and in the havana vieja area. Any help would be great, thankyou. jasmine x |

I was born in Cuba but haven't been back. I know that it's very rare for individuals to have email access on the island. Maybe you want to book 1 night at a state run hotel to get your visa and then once you are there move to a casa particular. You can check out a few before you decide on which one you like. Try to give as much of your money as possible to individuals NOT THE STATE!

Dear Jasmine
You can reserve in hotels or particular houses in Cuba, where you prefer. You need booking before your arrival because its better have a reserved plce to stay , but it havent any relation with the goverment or the visa. You need the visa for the travel to Cuba, but you can choice free the place where you like to stay without any explanation. The particular house in Cuba are a legal bussines aproval by the goverment. Its better than hotels because it have an excelente confort and low cost. I send you a web site where you can reserve one if you like. Also I can recomed you ohers houses too. http://www.havana-guest-house.com/ Best regard, Martha

You can book a casa and get an e-mail confirmation and write the adress in the visa-form and/or immigration papers. Last December that was just fine. (Nobody asked for the confirmation but I felt more secure with it).
People from many casas can get access to internet. There is a website www.casaparticular.info through wh I can recommend Casa Sergio y Miriam - not a stylish old house but a genuine appartment but great friendly, funny and helpful people. Enjoy your trip.
