| Antwerp | Shopping and eating in Antwerp Posted: Fri August 24, 2007 03:32 AM UTC
I'll be visiting Antwerp for a couple of days (Aug 28-29) n have a couple of questions about it
1. R there any local cafes (not 2 expensiv) serving authentic Belgian food, close to Radisson or Hilton? 2. Wat r d Belgian specialities I must try. (I am a food writer) 3. Not to expensive places to shop 4. Where can I pick up some good glassware? 5. Some grocery market/ flea market if there is one on Tuesday n Wednesday near Hilton or Radisson 6. How far is Metropolitan theatre from these hotels. Sorry its a long list but ur answers will be really appreciated -V- 6. |

Most of your questions you already asked at
http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-371098- Just pointing out that it isn't necessary to repeat, because people that frequent the Belgium forum will come across it anyway. 1. See your other thread 2. Cheese croquettes, mussels, beer, chocolates, rabbit, Gentse waterzooi 3. Ask a local 4. Ask a local. There's glass and glass. What are you looking for: crystal? expensive or cheap? 5. Market: wednesday morning from 8-13 hrs on St. Jansplein.

1. everywhere how many would you like to visit?
I visited once the 11th commandment with a Hong Kong journalist writer (Eat & Travel magazine) but the food is not recomendable there Pelgrom pub; very local Den Engel; very high quality beer menu and food prepared with beer Waagstuk at Stadswaag; local brewery with local food prepared with their beer: Het Pakhuis; very exclusive environment to go to eat: Het Pomphuis (but you need to take taxi or bus as it is out of the direction); local restaurants in the area of Slachthuislaan (slaughter street). I went once to bitterpee... bit expensive but quite nice... depends on if the food is prior to the beer ? Chocolats... but try the best ones like Del Rey just two as they will cost you 0,5 euro each almost :) but go inside and take some shots if you want pictures. at the Wilde Zee you have several chocolate stores and also a cookie store. Try some Antwerpse Handjes or Elixir d Anvers (I don't like it that much) at Desiree de Lille you can taste all kinds of waffels, mind there are many different kinds! As for distances... most places are close too :) if you don't mind walking 15 minutes. specialities: mossels (had great one at the restaurant Het Zolderke) Historical pub, if you are there on a Wednesday go to the Muze at the Melkmarkt; other eldest pub in Antwerp is Quinten Matsys. cheapest pubs must be probably in the student area :) another speciality is stew (you can try that in Het Pakhuys); or rabbit (idem); you also have headmeat and ham from Ghent (Ganda ham) you have chicorei... the bitter white leafe roofs (best are eaten at home hehehe); grocery market is on saturday and sunday so you miss it flea markets mmm I don't know by head but mostly they are in the weekend or on Friday I think. As for the theatre, if you mean the metrolopis movie theatre, you can go there by bus departing at Rooseveltplaats or you can take tram 3 direction Merksem.

I'm sorry guys about repeating the question, just couldn't find the question asked earlier.
Anyways thanks a lot for all ur insights. Was also wondering if there is a VT meeting on one of those 2 days. I'd really like to meet some VT members and locals for a travel story on Antwerp. Thanks again. -V-

Vidhi, on your VT homepage there's a link to Forum Postings. That's where you find your previous 10 or so postings.
