Hi,
You mention Changu. Do you mean Lake Changu, this can be done in a day from Gangtok but a permit (in addition to your 15 day permit) is required and can be organised via a travel agent who will organise the day. This is definetly worth a visit and is one of the most amazing views that I have ever seen. That's as far as I can help on the North. We based ourselves in Gangtok and then Pelling (west). I found the following website quite helpful www.sikkiminfo.net

they are 2 or 3 day trips upto Yumthang Valley which is really worth if you got the time.
Ask for information at the Modern Central Lodge in Gangtok they will help you but don't stay their, the rooms are cold and damp, Checkout the Hotel Potala across the road down the hill alittle bit you will find better rooms with hot water & TV for same price than at Modern Central Lodge. Many traveller goto Modern Central Lodge for food & to find other people to join tours to bring the cost down. if you can't to the tour then these are also good places to check out. Rumtek Pemayangste from pelling you can get to Darjeeling aswell. Good Luck

In all of India, I think this area is my favorite. The landscape is so pretty and the people are fabulous.
In Darjeeling: Ganga Maya Park Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoo (at one time they had a snow leopard breeding program which is why I went) Tiger Hill at sunrise for a view of Mount Kachenjunga Take a ride on the famous toy train Yiga Chholing Monastery Ava Art Gallery Tea Plantations/Factory Tibetan Self Help Refugee Center Druk Sangok Choling Monastery Japanese Temple/Peace Pagoda In/From Gangtok: Changu (Tsomgo) Lake Ropeway Cable Car Enjoy!

Sorry, didn't realize you live in Darjeeling (lucky you!) and were looking for places to visit between Darjeeling and Gangtok, etc. Changu Lake is great but as you probably know you'll have to get a permit to visit. If all in your group are Indian you have shouldn't have any problem. If there is a mix of Indian and foreigners, you might have a headache. Visit the Tourism Office for help. (My husband is Indian and I'm American and it took us a full day to sort it all out and finally get a permit, but it was definitely worth it.)

Hi, We shared a Jeep with a couple who we met and as far as I can remember it cost around 650 Rupees each for a day. The more people in a jeep, the cost per person comes down.
