I've only stayed there once and have gone thru a couple of times but from a recent article I read, there are quite a number of Vietnam era vets that live in the suburbs around the town. I even came across a travel forum for the town so if you google Udon/Udorn, you should be able to find this forum and get very specific answers from expats.

Udon Thani is very inexpensive compared to other cities in Thailand, such as: Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai.
Personally, I think you could live there quite well for <$1,000 U.S. a month. But a lot depends on what type of lodging you want, Thai or Falang food, what type of entertainment you are reffering to; i.e. movies, bowling, whatever.
