| Amalfi | Where to stay along Amalfi Coast Posted: Tue August 21, 2007 08:40 PM UTC
My husband, teenage daughter and I are planning a one week trip to the Amalfi coast the last week of October. We have been to Italy many times, but never south of Rome! We mostly love to shop, eat, drink wine and just enjoy the "life" in Italy. We are also interested in the art and architecture. Which town is the best to stay in? With a teenager I'd love to find a 2 bedroom suite or apartment for $500 or less per night. Is that possible? Any recommendations?
Thank you! |

Hi, It's hard to advise someone where to stay. Everybody has there own idea about their ideal location. If I was making this decision for my family I would choose Positano. Its situated about halfway between Ravello and Sorrento on the Amalfi coast. Very close to Praiano and Amalfi itself. For $500.00 per night, you will more or less have the pick of the hotels. There is a beautiful 4* hotel in Positano by the name of the Domina Inn Royal, with fabulous sea views.
I would have though you could get a double and a single room for a total of around $350 - $400 per night. Check out www.dominiahotels.it

good advice you got already. Personally I would choose Amalfi. I spent many a summer there (more specifically in Conca dei Marini, very close to Amalfi) and I enjoyed being somewhat in the middle of everything, Positano on one side, Paestum on the other. And the mountains above, the sea below.

There really aren't any bad choices here. Positano and Ravello are both lovely although Ravello is pricey and not as convenient for travelling. We were somewhat less impressed than others with Amalfi itself. Less frequently mentioned are places like Priano between Amalfi and Positano and the Maiori and Minori east of Amalfi but right on the main road and probably a little cheaper. Ferry service to Capri is from Amalfi and Positano altho the ferry will bypass Positano in rough seas especially on the return trip.

know what you mean nicolaitan. It's not that I was more impressed by Amalfi than by others localities but it was more of a town than Praiano et al, and I went there easily. Just thought there was more to do and it was more practical staying in Amalfi. I spent a month there every summer for 8 years and it was the ideal location for me.
Positano is quainter, Minori is secluded and quiet, all that's true. You can get to these places easily from Amalfi. Amalfi, with its great market! and friends were there or close :)

Amalfi is central and a great hotel within your price range could be the Hotel Luna Convento. I have listed them in my Amalfi pages under Hotel tip.

Hey alza - if I was staying ( translate if God blessed me ) a month, I would also probably end up in Amalfi. If only for the gelatos during the jazz on the steps to the cathedral.

oh yeah, loved the Luna Convento! and their discotheque on seaside. Dancing til dawn under the stars, that's a the life!
nicolaitan, that's exactly why I like Amalfi so much, the granite at the foot of the cathedral! hehe

Wow - Thank you all for the great information. The hotels mentioned look incredible, but can't accomodate us the week we're going. So, I guess it's off to my travel agent. Thanks again!

You could try the Hotel Belvedere in Conca dei Marini, minutes from Amalfi Centre in the direction of Positano.
Or the Hotel Santa Caterina, about 800 meters from Amalfi Centre in the direction of Positano. Both are built on the cliff and have a lovely pool. I never stayed at Santa Caterina because there was a climb to it but many friends told me it's very pleasant. you can do a search for both on the Net.

Hillary and Chelsea Clinton stayed at the Santa Caterina some years ago. Five stars, quite expensive.

You will fall in love with the Amalfi coast. Positano is
my favorite place and as far as art, shopping, wine, and good food, you will find it all here! There are many day trips you can make from here as well. October is beautiful. There are many places that fall in your price range. Make sure you have a balcony and view of the ocean. ENJOY!
