| Mannheim | PLEASE REPLY! LEAVING IN 2 DAYS... Posted: Tue September 2, 2003 03:47 AM UTC
Hi, I will be traveling to Mannheim in 3 days-9/4. My grandmother was born there. However due to her painful memories of WWII has not returned to Germany since. When I return home I would like to bring her home a wurst to bring back a good memory for her. I was told that you can't take any food out of the country? Does anyone have any ideas? Any ideas on a good hotel? Her old street was Frolich. Just trying to track my family history and to see the place that I heard the stories about from grandma growing up. Thanks

Check http://www.aphis.usda.gov/travel/usdatips.html
for up-to-date rules on importing meat products. Hmmmn, doesn't look good. However, you live in Houston, and I have to believe that there are importers in Houston who have some of the same wurst that you would find in Mannheim. I live in the Dallas area and find that it is often easier to buy locally from importers than to bring it back from Europe. According to Maps on Yahoo, there appears to be a Frölichstrasse in Mannheim; perhaps that is the street your grandmother had in mind. Bill

HI! Barbie in Heidelberg here. I am an American (non military) living here for the past 15 months (and loving it!). I visit Mannheim quite frequently (only 18 k from here) and know the area pretty well.
I found a great map site of Mannheim at this address. http://www.hot-maps.de/europe/germany/baden_wuertt I hope you will be able to 'cut and paste' this long URL. The spelling of the street you are looking for is: Frölichstraße . Paste that into the search box and you will see the location come up. When you get to Mannheim (if by train) you should go from the train station (Bahnhof) straight out to the center of town at the Wasserturm (water tower) That is a very lovely park area. From there you would contiune going in that direction (I believe it is northeast, by direction) towards the Neckar River. Once over the river you would be in Neckarstaadt. That is the area of town that Frölichstraße is located. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance for travel in and around Mannheim. When will you be there and how long? As for getting a wurst here and bringing it back? Do NOT try it! They are very strict about meat products coming into the States. You will loose your wurst and get a big fine! Take it from me, the wursts you can get from am importer there in the States are just as good as here. I have eaten all of the varieties and a wurst is a wurst! Hope I have helped you. We have snuck wurst back without being caught, but if you are caught you are looking at a fine. You can bring back wurst that is in a jar or can. There are several German butchers in America that have excellent wurst that they can send you by mail.
