How can I best get to Pietermaritzburg from Johannesburg other than by car - I don't drive? I have seem there are overnight train services - are these safe/recommendable?

What about Greyhound? I wouldn't personally take the train - they're as slow as the coaches anyway!

Don't take the train. It is not safe. There are numerous coaches that travel from JHB to PMB. www.greyhound.co.za, www.intercity.co.za and www.saroadlink.co.za. They are all roadworthy and safe to travel on. You can fly from JHB direct to PMB, or fly to Durban (definitely the cheaper option) and catch the Cheetah coach up to PMB. Look on my PMB page for more infomation.
The bazz bus will also take you there, but it is a backpacker bus and will take 1) time and 2) quite expensive.
Hope this helps.

Have done that trip via bus myself in 2001 and it was just fine. Go see the statue of Gandhi in Pietermaritzburg. It's a nice little town.
