| Fussen | Stay in Fussen or Schwangau Posted: Mon August 20, 2007 05:49 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be in Munich to attend a conference and have decided to visit the castles for a day. I plan to spend two nights in the area with a whole day in between. What is a better place to base myself - Fuessen or Schwangau. I will not have a car- public transport will be my main mode of transport. Also, should I book tickets for the castles from their website or is it possible to get them cheaper elsewhere? Cheers, Mr Hyde |

Schwangau gets totally "dead", when the castles are closed, buses will mostly not run then any more.
Fuessen has good connections by bus & train from early in the morning till late at night. NO cheaper tickets anywhere !

stay in Füssen
http://www.fuessen.de > tickets If you stay there and can be early in the moring in Hohenschwangau you don't need to reserve tickets. Thus saving the reservation fee. > ... or is it possible to get them cheaper elsewhere? No. Guess this would even undermine the foundations of the German society.

Hi Mr.Hyde,
while it's probably fairly clear to the readers here, which castles you're referring to, I would like to point out that it's rather ambiguous. There's something like 30 castles in Bavaria, most of which are rather impressive. You can find an overview of the state run ones on http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/englisch/palace/index.htm So even if you'd decide to stay in Munich, you'd find some nice things to see.. Enjoy your stay, Glissi

Actually you can also safely stay in Schwangau, Füssen is of course much larger giving you more choice and a nice castle in town, but if you find a nice inexpensive place in Schwangau that you like, go for it. The big mistake to avoid is to stay in HOHENSCHWANGAU which is the overpriced touristy place exactly beneath the castles. Schwangau is quite a charming village with extremely picturesque corners a lot less touristy than I thought. I have wheeled my way in a wheelchair from Schwangau to Hohenschwangau, this took me 40 minutes, it's about 3-4 km. You can also rent bikes there, the area is almost flat.
