I think the extra five pounds is well worth it.
The bus journey from York to Helmsley takes around 1 hour 20 mins, and I think it calls at York rail station too. This link should help you.

Thankyou so much for the link..i have checked it out and due to my arrival time in York (5pm), the bus trip is just over 2 hours :( ...
And I cannot believe that I have to stop at over 80 stops along the way!!!! Ha ha!!!
Is there no other bus to take? Would a taxi be super expensive? Would prefer something cheaper of course though!
Thankyou!

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 11:27 AM UTC
No, travelling in North Yorkshire by public transport is not easy. There are buses alright, but times are not always easy to combine with other means of transport and many take you to places early in the morning but have only an immediate return...
An alternative could perhaps be to catch a train from York to Thirsk (if your Manchester train goes all the way to Middlesborough that might be the same) and check if there are more buses (or at least better times) from Thirsk to Helmsley. If not, a taxi should be cheaper from Thirsk than York. The same goes for Malton to which you get from York by the Scarborough train: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

What about Northallerton to Helmsley? You could take the train from York to (www.transpennineexpress.co.uk) and then the bus from the link her - Northallhttp://www.getdown.org.uk/bus/bus/m7.htmerton .
Northallerton is a really good place to visit - I have details on my pages.
Running short of time but does anyone know if the 128 from Scarborough stops in Helmsley? I think it may do.

Yes Northallerton is the administrative capital of North Yorkshire so it's not "nothing" :)

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 02:12 PM UTC
Found it! Here is the best way - Yorkshire Coastliner bus from York to Pickering (www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk) and then in Pickering change to a 128 Scarborough to Helmsley bus and see this link(http://www.eyms.co.uk/timetable/scarborough/128SUSC.HTML for the timetable. Any more questions please ask. This is a beautiful part of the world undervisted that not many people who stay in York get out to.

I forgot - yes pay the extra and use the train. The trains are new and comfortable with refreshments etc. See www.transpennineexpress.co.uk.

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 07:09 PM UTC
Thankyou so so much both of you for all the wonderful advice... I looked through all the sites to find out the best way to reach helmsley but unfortunately as I wont be arriving in York till 430-500pm, buses from pickering to helmsley and northallerton to helmsley have already finished.
I did find a website which seemed to fit the bill even though it will take two hours to get to helmsley from York (going through every village, town, main square and side street along the way!)
It was this one...
http://www.yorkshiretravel.net/journeyplanner/showJourneyDetails.do?method=default&rid=1187546977414
but Im a little worried as the owner of the B&B Im staying at in Helmsley said there were no buses at that time..is it that he doesnt know of this route or have I completely mis-read the website!!!?
Thankyou again and again...you were great!

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 07:30 PM UTC
While we are talking about Yorkshire Coastliner..is it a case of just turning up and buying tickets there or can they be bought in advance? And for the 128 from pickering..how does that work? I will have 20mins from arriving to departing...will that be enough timeto buy tickets or do we pay on the bus?
Thankyou again!!

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 07:37 PM UTC
Just pay the driver on the buses - if you want to know the fares I can easily find out. I have not checked the timetables in too much detail but do the buses stop and start in the same street in Pickering - we were there last Saturday but do not remember seeing a bus station although I did see the Yorkshire Coastliner go through.
There is only one VT page on Helmsley - pity because it is a beautiful old town. On my Whitby pages are a series of scenes of the area to the north.

Re: Transport from York to Helmsley Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 10:06 PM UTC
...and only a few very small pages on Pickering which is an equal shame. I hope to remedy that and add both Helmsley and Pickering to my next trip "home" whenever that will be - kitan is keen to discover other things than his native York and I can't blame him.
Trying to remember the Pickering part of our old Coastliner tours to the coast I think the Coastliner stops along the main street in Pickering and I'd be surprised if the other buses don't do the same. It's not a big place - just cosy :)
