Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Belgrade Football fans (Rangers) - Where to go, What to do, etc etc
Posted: Fri August 17, 2007 08:36 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

Im coming over with several friends for a football match involving Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) v Rangers.

just wondering where to go for beers (pubs/clubs etc??) Also, being as football fan, my most important question is............ how much for a beer?!!

I arrive around midnight (only staying 2 nights) on the first night. Is there anywhere still open at that time on a Monday?

there is a mixture of friends coming over with various ages (21-60) so we would like to go to places where there is a good mix. i.e preferably pubs rather than clubs.

Having never been to Serbia, i understand that the Dinar is the local currency but that is unavailable to exchange in the UK, so would Euros do until i reached an ATM or exchanged my pounds in Dinars?

Also, how much for a taxi from Airport to city centre?.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Well...... I do think we will all be totally pissed (we are British football fansafter all!) , but we arent trouble makers. We have a few idiots the same as any football club but on a whole we are friendly. Also, Rangers have only taken 1000 tickets for the match so you wont be getting invaded like many other cities have! (Villareal, 14,000, Munich 12,000 etc etc) Also, its a bit more expensive from Scotland to Belgrade.

As for wearing a Kilt! I've never worn one in my life!! You may see a couple wearing them but you would see a lot more following the Scottish national team.

Thanks for your help, any further info wold be appreciated (i.e where NOT to go)

If I am you, I probably would just stay home or spend my money on a nice vacation with friends this time, don't expect much fun on that trip. The place is not geared towards the fun you probably expect, it could be on your side just a bunch of "quid" thrown away without any return.

Well, if it's pubs you're after you can try:
The Three Carrots Irish Pub - its address is: Kneza Miloša 16
The Black Turtle Pub - Kosančićev Venac 26

seriosly though, there are a lot of bars, cafes, and nightclubs in Belgrade...you can always go to Knez Mihajlova street and you will find something open...or try street of Strahinjica Bana.

You can check my Belgrade page, I have a section about nighlife..or if you want more info you can go to this website: http://www.belgradeeye.com/bars.html
It has a list of many pubs and bars in Belgrade, but it doesn't give any info about them or pictures.

Hope this helps :)

In Mediterranian area the locals look very-very down on people drunk in public. Interestingly, this has a genetic reason: an gene mutation was discovered in Mediterranian (primarily Palestinians, Israelis but also all others) which prevetns people being alcohol-addicted: alcohol simply does not appeal to us THAT much. Be careful - most likely you don't have the genetic protection a Serb or Turk or I (due my Mediterranian roots) have. It can be extreme: my wife is practically abstinent since over two decades for no apparent reason, just because she does not like the taste. She drinks a single drink on the New Year Eve, but not even during X'mas dinner. I may buy vine once in a while but more often than not I will just forget it.

Coffee or tea is an entirely different story, we are the worst addicts.

Keep it in your mind....

Again,

many thanks for everyones replies. You have all been great.

As I said before, although a lot of us will be drunk, we are friendly and we tend to know how to behave ourself without offending people. Also, it will be safety in numbers on the day of the game. The police and British representatives will try and ensure that we are all located in the one area of the city (most likely somewhere central or right beside the ground) and most fans will be arriving and leaving the day of the game.

Thanks again and I look forward to seeing Belgrade!! Come on Rangers!!

Hi I was in Serbia in July and stayed in Belgrade for 3 nights (I am from Glasgow) it was easy to exchange GBP at the airport but we brought english notes from the bank just in case they would not accept scottish notes, plenty to do in Belgrade, lovely fortress in the centre, I stayed in Serbia 12 nights and only saw 1 man drunk. We visited Red Star stadium and got a personal tour round the trophy room and taken to the vip part of the stadium. The people are lovely. Enjoy

I visited the (in)famous Gucha festival recently and I most of the time am in Hungary since mid-June. We spent quite a few time in Belgrade and rural Serbia.

I did see ONE drunk guy in Gucha, but his friends tried to take care about him that he does not make any stupidities. An other Serbian guy got drunk in a sleeper, while staying in his compartment with his g/f(?). She gave him very hard time, of course. That's it. (See my comment above). Sure there were probably more, than that but we would need to look hard to find any.

I suggest u to go in skadarlja district, where u can find a lot of super "kavana" (restaurants).
After dinner try the locals on the bench of the rivers (danube and sava), or in the city centre, (terazije, trg republike etc.)
belgrade is wonderful, it's cityzens even better!
Have a good stay and don't be too sad, zvezda is going to win! Napred Zvezda!

But it is a big circus, Keti. And once in a while we need to waste 2 hours for that spectacle.
